Reality TV auditions almost seems like an oxymoron. If it's supposed to be real, why should there be any auditions at all? Shouldn't they literally go out on the street and pick random people walking down the sidewalk? If these people are really supposed to represent a cross-section of the people in our country, why not skip the auditions, go for some real reality and just grab ten people off the street from various locations and force them all to live together?
Another thing, lets say we're willing to accept that they are auditioning for Reality TV, even though it doesn't seem so real. Then let's take the case of these "living together" shows. If they want reality, how about forcing the seven or eight people to share an overpriced three bedroom apartment in the ghetto with an irresponsible, absentee landlord that they actually have to pay for? Now that would be real.
Even though it's hard to accept that for a phenomenon like Reality TV there is actually auditioning going on, the real difficulty is swallowing the concept of "reality" when people are given a luxurious house to live in, and don't have to pay for it! But it is a way for you to break into the industry - they are constantly auditioning for Reality TV shows in your area, and you never know what could result from even just a brief appearance on "Blind Date!"
